The Neurobiological Effects of Methamphetamine Abuse
نویسنده
چکیده
Widespread abuse of central nervous system stimulants, such as methamphetamine, is increasing astronomically, most notably here in the Central Valley of California. Users of these drugs find them to be affordable and easily attainable, hence the increasing popularity and usage. It transiently increases the levels of dopamine in the brain, which is a highly desirable side effect of using the drug. However, the neurobiological effects of this chemical are severely detrimental, including changes to dopaminergenic terminals and transporters, and impairment of mental functions. It has also been found to increase levels of oxidative stress when used over a long period of time.1

Background: Methamphetamine (MA) which is known as “shisheh” in Iran is a drug that widely is used in many parts of the world and it is near to a decade that is available for the most drug users and has a considerable prevalence of use. Due to high abuse prevalence and very new challenging phenomenon, it is very important that researchers and treatment providers become more familiar with differ...
متن کاملEvaluating Amphetamine and Methamphetamine Abuse Frequency in Hospitalized Patients of the Psychiatric Ward of Farshchian Hospital in Hamadan City
Introduction: Amphetamine and methamphetamine are man-made materials. They were only used as drugs at the beginning, but gradually outspreaded as psychedelics because of their sympathomimetic effects. Different studies have shown that the frequency of amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse has been increasing; also, there is a close relationship in amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse with psyc...
متن کاملThe neurocircuitry involved in oxytocin modulation of methamphetamine addiction.
The role of oxytocin in attenuating the abuse of licit and illicit drugs, including the psychostimulant methamphetamine, has been examined with increased ferocity in recent years. This is largely driven by the potential application of oxytocin as a pharmacotherapy. However, the neural mechanisms by which oxytocin modulates methamphetamine abuse are not well understood. Recent research identifie...
متن کاملMethamphetamine and Amphetamine Differentially Affect Associative Learning: Behavioral and Neurobiological Correlates by Darien
One factor hypothesized to contribute significantly to addiction processes is maladaptive associative learning wherein substance-related cues become closely associated with the drug response. These strong associations are thought to contribute significantly to drug craving and promote the cycle of abuse by increasing susceptibility to relapse. One goal of the studies presented here was to model...
متن کاملNeural Correlates of Craving in Methamphetamine Abuse
Introduction: Methamphetamine is a powerful psychostimulant that causes significant neurological impairments with long-lasting effects and has provoked serious international concerns about public health. Denial of drug abuse and drug craving are two important factors that make the diagnosis and treatment extremely challenging. Here, we present a novel and rapid noninvasive method...
